Exploration #3e1: State Standards

The Education World: State Standards site provides easy access to the History Social Sciences Standards for most of the fifty states. Click on the link below, select your state from the drop down menu and then click on the Find button. Next click on the Social Sciences, Social Studies, or History link. You can also click on the Social Sciences link and then on the name of your state. In most cases, you will be taken to your State Department of Education web site.

Note to Pennsylvania Educators: Use the link below which will take you to the Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards Aligned System website.

If you are already familiar with a content standards website developed by your school, state or district, you may use that if it is more convenient and/or appropriate.

I'd suggest that you add each of the content standards documents for your major curriculum areas to your bookmarks/favorites for future reference. If the content standards documents are available as Adobe Acrobat .pdf files, you may also want to consider downloading them to your computer for quick reference in the future.

Note: If your State does currently have History/Social Science Standards, contact me via e-mail and we will arrange an alternate assignment.

Spend some time exploring your state's History/Social Science Standards with a primary focus on the grade level that you teach. You may also want to explore the grade levels above and below your grade level.

In the reflection activity that follows, you will be asked to identify one specific standard that will serve as the focus of your research and project later in the course.

Note: Often, the actual Standards document will be delivered to you as an Adobe Acrobat document. You will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader software to view the Standards document. If you do not already have that software installed on your computer, you can download the free software at the site below.
