State History/Social Science Standards As you have seen, the NCSS, NCHS and McREL Standards provide an overarching guidelines for the teaching of History/Social Science in the United States. However, the actual "scope, specific content, and sequence" is in the hands of State Departments of Education. These State History/Social Science Standards actually determine "what students should be taught, how they will be taught, and how student achievement will be evaluated." We will now turn our attention to the History/Social Science Standards for your state. You can usually find your History/Social Science Standards on your State's Department of Education web site. However, it is sometimes difficult to navigate those sites. For this exploration, we will use two sites which have created links to the curriculum standards for all fifty states on one easy-to-navigate page.
